This is a book I’m really excited about because I recently rediscovered it. I had first picked it up about 18 months ago and quickly put it back down. I wasn’t finding what I was looking for. But last month, I gave it another try and I could hardly put it down. It’s another classic work of Stoic Philosophy, similar to Meditations by Marucs Aurelieus, our first book club book! I’m pleased to announce the Big Nerds Book Club will be kicking off 2023 with “Letters of a Stoic” by Seneca.
Seneca Bio
Seneca was a wise man who lived a long time ago in ancient Rome. He was an advisor to Emperor Nero and lived a lavish life. He also spent years poor and alone banished from Rome. He wrote letters that are still read and loved today.
In these letters, Seneca shared advice on how to live a good and happy life. He talked about things like staying calm, being brave, and being kind to others. What makes Seneca's letters really special is how he wrote about his own life. He was honest about his mistakes and what he learned from them. This makes his advice feel real and actionable.
What To Expect
I hope the nerds are as excited to read about Seneca as I am to write about him! Each day I’ll be sending a lesson from one letter Seneca wrote. The book is a compilation of 40 letters Seneca wrote to a friend, Lucilius, after he retired from public life. They’re the personal writings of one of the most impactful thinkers in history.
I’ll try my best to do each letter justice. That said, it is not necessary at all, but if you have an extra ten minutes a day, I would recommend buying a copy to follow along. It’s the works of a master. No summary can do his letters absolute justice.
Until then, let’s finish up Clear Thinking on a good note!
