Have you ever not done something you wanted to do because you were worried what others would say?
You’re not alone. Even the most powerful man on earth had that feeling.
“Don’t waste the rest of your time here worrying about other people - unless it affects the common good. It will keep you from doing anything useful”
We’ve all heard this before, but never from a man of such power. And keep in mind, this is not a speech he’s giving to children, this is from his own personal journal never intended for publication.
I have caught myself holding back from certain actions, like starting a book club, because I worried what others would say (In fact, I still worry). I often make the excuse that when I have accomplished more, I can start one and people will not say anything negative about me.
It’s a dumb excuse. Because even the Emperor of the most powerful kingdom in history needed to remind himself not to worry what others would say. If I wait to be more important than Marcus Aurelius before I do things I want to do, I’m going to live a long sad life.
So go ahead…
Speak your mind.
Ask her out.
Start the hobby.
Sometimes you just gotta say “f*ck ‘em”
