Ask god for more or ask him for the strength to ask for less?
You can have anything you want but not everything you want. The more you desire, you more you need to do things you don’t want to do and the less time you have to appreciate those things you desired that you now have.
I think humans generally have faith in a higher power. Some people are religious and they believe in one or many gods. Others believe in the power of manifesting. Some even believe in politics and the power of a strongly worded social media post!
The point is that we have desires and we often ask the higher power to help us get it. The importance of language here is crucial.
Our thoughts shape our words but our words shape our thoughts as well. The words we use to define our desires are some of the most important words we will ever use. They can change us fundamentally.
Seneca says,
“…why should I demand from fortune that she should give me this and that rather than demand frmo myself that I should not ask for them? (Seneca, Letter XV)
Marcus Aurelius, another ancient Stoic Philosopher has a line he wrote in his personal journal, Meditations, where he says not to ask for less or more but to ask for the strength to overcome either adversity or the strength to reach the goals himself.
Asking a higher power for help is powerful. It can be comforting, and energizing. The impact of prayer depends (nor entirely) on the words we say.
Asking for a million dollars is not helpful. Asking to be happy with what you have is helpful.
Asking for a new opportunity is not helpful. Asking for the clarity to see new opportunities is helpful.
I ask god for traits, not for outcomes. I do the thing. Nobody else. I am responsible for me. I’m only asking for help.
Question of The Day
What do I ask of the world? Does it give me power or take it away?
