"I'm busy now but I’ll start exercising when I have time." This is actually choosing a hard time to start.
There's no perfect time to start. Now is best because the action itself makes it perfect. Nothing else does.
Want to start a project, eat healthier, or exercise? Just do it.
Waiting for the perfect time? What if things change, which they will? Will you new habit survive?
Do you want a habit that's easy or a habit that lasts? Choose one that lasts by starting a habit during a hard time. You’ll make the habit more resilient. You’ll stick to it despite your external conditions, not because of your external conditions.
If you're always busy, but for the moment you are not, still start your change now. Waiting for anything will make starting harder.
Marcus Aurelius said,
“It stares you in the face. No role is so well suited to philosophy as the one you happen to be in right now.” (11.7)
As Emperor during war, he didn't wait for peace to embrace philosophy.
Don't wait for the next deadline or accomplishment, not even for tomorrow. And don't wait for January 1. That annoys me more than anything. Today is perfect, and so are you.
Brain Gains:
What life area do you want to improve? What's stopping you?
Don't wait for January. Start now and be ahead when the ball drops.
