The last month, things have been crazy. People are saying things they would never say. People are overcome with fear and hate.
There’s nothing wrong with being scared. We just need to learn to deal with fear. We control our own minds more than we give ourselves credit for.
When a storm begins, the waves grow taller and the tides grow stronger. It pulls everything out of place. People say and do things completely out of their character when they’re scared. Except for a chosen few.
Marcus Aurelius was the emperor of all of Rome. He ruled during the Parthian War, Germanic Invasions, and the Antonine Plague. And at the same time, he faced succession issues, economic strains caused by the plague and internal political mayhem.
The storm he faced was savage and enormous. He had to remind himself to stay strong…
“To be like the rock that the waves keep crashing over. It stands unmoved and the raging of the sea falls still around it.” (4.49)
You can be taken away by the tide and act uncontrollably. Or you can set your roots and become a rock - unbothered by the tide, you remain unapologetically yourself. That is the nature of a true man. A man who stands strong against the ebbs and flows of life.
But there’s another part to becoming unmovable that is less clear. To become a rock, you need to be self-aware. If you don’t notice when you’re starting to get pulled by the tides, you’ll be too late. You’ll be swallowed in the tide and thrown around by your surroundings.
If you figure out what situations make you lose control, you can win. Without that awareness, you lose the battle every time.
