New year, same question.
What do I want my life to look like when I’m on my deathbed?
Who are the people I want to have impacted?
Who are the people around me?
Where am I?
What am I known for?
What will people say they learned from me?
What will people close to me say about me when I’m not around?
What will remind people of me?
“Something about starting with the end in mind… makes it easier to decide which path to take. Life in general works similarly.” (Parrish, 241)
If I can answer these questions, I can work backwards to decide what I should do now. These answers are my North Star. And that doesn’t mean I’m locked into these answers forever. It’s only natural that my answers will change slightly as I change.
All my decision-making skills we’ve spoken about for the past month are to help consistently move towards my north stars. No decision is better than another if you don’t know where you’re trying to go. It’s like that old line about a boat with no destination having no good or bad winds.
Ask yourself the questions above. Get even more detailed where you can. Paint the picture of your life in your final days. Then look at every decision as a fork in the road on your way there.
Question of The Day
Pick a few above. I really encourage you to try writing out your answers. It can be very instructive for daily life choices.

PS. We start Letters From a Stoic tomorrow! I’m really excited. My biggest problem writing about this book is how inferior I feel doing it. The writing is so powerful it’s been a great learning experience for me. I know if I can teach one lesson from each letter with just half the skill Seneca shows, this will be the best month yet!
PPS. I hope this year is full of more blessings, more success and more life! Thank you for being a BigNerd. I love all my nerds!
Your plan is 40 years too short.
