Welcome to BigNerds Book Club
For the hardworking young men with a sense of humor
Hey Nerd,
Welcome to the BigNerds Book Club (BBC) for swole young men with a passion for knowledge.
I’m really excited to announce BOOK 1, but first let me explain how the book club will work this month.
(yes, you may have gotten this email already - migrating it to Substack now)
Live Meetings: We’ll have one live meeting on Zoom or G-Meet to talk about the book. That is scheduled for November 28, 3 weeks after we officially begin on November 7th.. I’ll moderate/mc/dj the discussion and you’ll get more details about format later.
Morning Wisdom: Every morning, you’ll get a short email in your inbox from your favorite Jewish Canadian basketball player/model/overall stud (hopefully that’s me).
The email will have a short passage from the book or discuss a specific topic and have a prompt/question of the day.
The prompt is meant to have you think about how what you’re reading about affects or relates to your own life.
If you’re a BBC member, then I like you. And I want to hear from you when you feel inspired. When a prompt OR a book passage speaks to you, share it by replying to the email.
Avoiding Spoilers: Each email will be timed to avoid spoilers. But to keep it interesting, they will move along with the book based on a specific reading cadence. That cadence will be made explicit for each book.
What’s the cadence? Our final meeting for this book is after 3 weeks, which is 21 days. That means that if you take the length of the book in pages and divide it by 21, you get the number of pages to read everyday to finish just on time.
The point is, I’ll give you a number of pages to read each day if you want to be sure to avoid all possible spoilers. (aiming for 10-15 pages per day on average)
*Note that if you can’t read that fast, it’s not a problem. I actually host another book club for teeny tiny babies that’s probably just right for you.
Now that the basics are out of the way, I will announce our first book, beginning November 7…. DRUMROLL PLEASE
Meditations by Marcus Aurelius
Meditations is the personal journal of Marcus Aurelius, an old Roman Emperor. It is one of the foundational works of Stoic Philosophy. The book is split into letters and passages that connect based on recurring themes like: virtue, strength, desire, change and more. I have opened this book up most days of the past year. There is such deep wisdom that makes me think hard about how I live my life. It’s a book I keep coming back to in hard times and I cannot wait to discuss this epic work with you.
Sincerely,
Your BBC King,
Noah
PS. Get THIS COPY of the book. There have been many translations and I find this to be the best one - easiest to read without losing meaning.
