Sometimes you need to hear the same thing over and over to deeply understand it. Sometimes you need to hear it at the right moment. Sometimes you just need to hear it from a king.
Marcus says in Book 2,
“...You could leave life right now. Let that determine what you do and say and think…”(2.11)
This is not a unique message. It’s one we often hear when somebody dies. “Live everyday like it’s your last.” And it feels wise in the moment, but overtime we forget how fragile our lives are.
We worry so much about the future that we don’t stop to consider that ‘the future’ may never even come. The next 24 hours may be the last ones you have in this life. Will you be proud of how you lived your final hours?
What would you do if you knew today was your last day on earth?
A response people give is that if they knew today was their last day, they wouldn’t work and they would speak their mind to their coworker they don’t like and they would spend all their money. But give yourself more time to think about it.
If you knew you would pass at midnight, would you want the last things you do on this earth to be lazy, rude or selfish? Is that how you would like to leave this earth? Or would you be more proud to live your last day calmly, unbothered by petty drama and unaffected by the power of money.
There is no right answer. But it’s useful to consider how you would spend your last day. Because the only way to make sure you die how you want, is to live every day that same way.

I want my last day on earth to be spent loving. Loving my family, my friends, the world around me. And loving myself. I also want to die happy. To love and to be happy are choices. Simply making that choice makes a massive difference. Where I have trouble is reminding myself when I'm very unhappy that that too is a choice. I need to prioritize loving and being happy every day to make sure I DIE loving and happy.
