I can’t fix a problem I don’t know exists.
That’s why I think an ego is not just annoying but also dumb. It doesn’t help and it doesn’t feel good. Our ego protects us from the pain of looking at ourselves for who we really are. And the price we pay is making the same mistake over and over.
We try to convince ourselves we’re better than we are, which is exactly what stops us from becoming better than we are.
“In the case of some sick people, it is a matter for congratulation when they come to realize for themselves that they are sick” (Seneca, Letter VI)
If we want to become better versions of ourselves, we need to know where we’re falling short. There are two ways to find that out:
regular introspection through journalling or meditation or…
seek and appreciate criticism from others
Of the two, I think the second is much easier. People are constantly holding back their criticism of you because they assume you don’t want to hear it. Your job, if you want it, is to make them aware that you’re not like other people. You’re a Big Nerd. You WANT to get better. You’re bigger than your ego.
Question of The Day
Are you willing to admit your weakness to overcome it?
Pay attention today. To your mind. Notice the things that make you emotional.
